News entry content

This longitudinal study analyzes how CDT’s affordable housing financing investments help address the pervasive affordable housing shortage in neighborhoods throughout the country.

The report looks at the significant ways that stable, affordable, and well-maintained housing benefits low-income households and communities. Chief among these benefits is a reduction of housing cost burdens, which allows low-income renters to spend more on food and health care.

The report concludes that the affordability of CDT-financed properties contributes to consistently low rates of tenant turnover. Such residential stability has positive ramifications for the tenants’ emotional well-being, their ability to build and maintain a social network, and their children’s short- and longer-term academic performance.

The properties contribute to the stabilization and potential revitalization of their surrounding communities, even in neighborhoods that tend to be disproportionately poor and under-invested.

While significant challenges remain in many of these areas, there is a growing sense of optimism about many aspects of their future.

The study was conducted by Sean Zielenbach, Ph.D. of SZ Consulting LLC.
